MIRA, pronounced “meer-a”, is an Italian word that means design, purpose, and focus. Our beginning used the meaning of these three words as its foundation and eight years later it continues to be the building blocks with which our business is being built. Kevin Bergstresser, the founder and current part owner, recognized that for MIRA Floors & Interiors to provide superior differentiated consumer value from the many other flooring installation companies he needed to:

Whether you are a homeowner considering a renovation, a Project Manager on an insurance restoration site or a Strata committee attempting to make a decision as a group, we can bring the showroom to you. Our mobile showrooms are equipped with a complete range of flooring and window covering products and samples, which allow you – the decision maker in your flooring project – to save time, and consider options in your own environment. We are able to service the entire lower Mainland with our complete selection of products during a design consultation.

Green Carpet Options

When selecting from the many different carpeting materials available, it is important to realize that there are pros and cons associated with each type of material. Understanding the pros and cons is important when it comes to choosing the carpet that is right for you.

Wool is a traditional sustainable carpeting material that has a number of advantages over synthetic carpeting. Most notably, wool is both renewable and biodegradable. In addition, because it is simply cut from sheep and llamas, fossil fuels are not needed to produce the material.

Nonetheless, wool is rich in texture and is quite durable. In addition, it has a natural crimp, which makes it possible for wool to maintain the springy quality that is needed for plush carpeting. In addition, it is resistant to moisture, soiling, fire, and static. Research has also shown that dust mites are less likely to take up residents in wool and that wool has a tendency to trap pollutants, which helps keep pollution out of the air.

Plant fibers are also sustainable, biodegradable VOC-free and chemically untreated. The best known plant fiber used for carpeting is sisal, which is made from the leaves of agave plants that are grown without the use of pesticides. Although the production of sisal could be more efficient than it currently is, it is still considered to be one of the greenest carpet options. In addition, it is durable and easy to care for. It also has a unique texture, doesn’t capture mites or allergens and has natural antistatic and sound absorbent properties.

Getting Rid of Old Carpeting

If you have decided to tear up your carpeting and to replace it with some beautiful bamboo flooring or with a green carpet, you may be wondering what to do with your old carpeting. If at all possible, the best option is to recycle the carpeting. Depending on the materials used to make the carpet, however, this may not be possible. In that case, there are many creative things you can do with the carpeting so it doesn’t go to waste in a landfill.

Our Green Position

Many of us who live in Vancouver / Lower Mainland believe we live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. To no one's surprise, in 2008 Business Week ranked Vancouver as the 4th “best place” to live beating out world class cities such as Sydney, Auckland, New York, San Francisco, and Amsterdam.

As MIRA owners, employees, and installers we are aware that the nature surrounding us is negatively impacted by our insatiable desire to consume. In 2010 Cache Creek, where Vancouver / Lower Mainland garbage is buried into the ground, will be at capacity and plans are underway to double the size of this landfill (Vancouver Sun – August 8, 2008). We would like to do our part to slow this flow of garbage by turning your old carpet into new products including carpet. Awareness of the environment and how to reduce our impact on it is a significant objective at MIRA Floors and Interiors. We therefore are always reviewing our environmental initiatives and looking for ways to improve our performance in this area.

At MIRA our commitment is to focus on green initiatives that are both preventative in terms of the products we install into your living spaces and reactive to how the products we remove are recycled.
