Carpet

Tile Floor in Bathroom

Warmth
Heat efficiency in the home starts from the floor up and statistically carpet provides the most warmth of any floor covering and is the most efficient way to add cosiness and comfort to a home. Wouldn't you rather step onto nice soft carpet when you wake up in the morning, instead of a cold hard floor.

Comfort
Carpet will give you softness under foot by cushioning your footfalls and reducing fatigue. Carpet allows you and your family to curl up on the floor to watch TV or just relax.

Design Versatility
Carpet provides the necessary textural relief now that there is such an increased focus on clean lines and simplicity in interior design. Carpet forms the basis of your room and will affect, and set off all other colours and furnishings you choose to put in your home. It offers a large array of choice and can add colour, pattern and of course texture to your interior design.

Noise
Carpeting your home will soften harsh sounds and create a quieter, more peaceful living environment. As one of the most effective acoustical building materials, carpet will reduce noise generation in two ways - at floor level by cushioning objects hitting the floor, for example footsteps or dropped items, and by absorbing other sounds around your home without reducing the quality of projected sound such as your voice, or music

Carpet

Carpet typically fits into a few main style categories resulting in an endless array of home styling options. Selecting the right style for your room may depend on your décor style, volume of traffic in the room and the room itself. Today, the choices are almost limitless within each style – be sure to research, touch & feel before investing in a wall-to-wall carpet and remember to have fun decorating your home!

Saxony/Plush:
A dense level-cut pile with tall pile heights and closely packed tufts. The result is a smooth, soft surface and works well in a traditional décor in a master bedroom, dining room or formal living room.

Cut Pile Texture:
A dense level-cut pile that has more twists than the saxony or plush that creates a multi-coloured look. Cut pile texture is great for hiding footprints and is popular for any room in the home. A TWIST pile carpet is much the same as cut pile carpet, with the exception that each fibre has been highly twisted and is extremely durable. Twist pile carpet makes the actual carpet appear to have greater texture. Because of its construction, twist pile does not "shade" like how cut pile carpets tend to do.

Cut & Loop:
Combines cut tufts with lower loop tufts to create a large variety of textures and patterns. Cut and loop styles add character to a floor with soft botanical or contemporary geometric patterns.

Berber:
The level loop carpet is constructed using simple loops of equal height and its durable nature is suitable for high-traffic areas and informal rooms.

Frieze:
A type of textured carpet with very high, tightly twisted tufts that curl at the pile surface. Frieze is excellent for high traffic areas and family living spaces.

Hardwood

Benefits of Hardwood Floor

Longevity
With the introduction in the past ten to fifteen years of durable finishes that are easy to repair, solid-wood floors can last for decades. Throughout the centuries, hardwood has been a durable, design friendly, and long lasting flooring of choice for the consumers.

Coziness and Warmth
In comparison to laminate customers will often reflect on hardwood being more pleasant and warm to walk on which comes from the natural make up of wood. Wood is an excellent insulator, thanks to its thousands of tiny air chambers per cubic inch, which hold in heat.

Hypoallergenic
Got allergies? Wood floors don't give pollen, animal dander, mold, etc. any place to hide and thrive. Hardwood flooring is an excellent choice for anyone with any kind of environmental allergies.

Easy to Clean
A little sweeping and a little mopping, and your hardwood floors will keep looking nice for a long time to come. Even families with dogs and kids are realizing that it's easier to mop a hardwood floor than try to spray/scrub/wash grape Kool-Aid out of a carpet. Another perk is that a scratch here or a gouge there really just adds character to wood floors (of course, you can always have them refinished if you prefer perfection).

Increase Home Value
Unless you're going to be living in the same house for the rest of your life, you should think about how the flooring choices you make today will affect the price you can get for your home when you sell it. In a recent study of real estate agents across North America hardwood flooring can increase the value of a home by as much as 10%.

Mira Floors and Interiors carries lots of selection of hardwood, come by our showroom today!

Hardwood: Relative Hardness Scale

Relative Hardness

The Janka Wood Hardness Scale is a world wide accepted tool that measures how resistant each wood species is to denting and wear. It measures the force required to embed a .444-inch steel ball to half its diameter in the wood. The higher the number, the harder the wood or the more resistant to denting and wear it will be.

Hardwood: Relative Stability Scale

Relative Stability Scales

The numbers in the chart reflect the dimensional change coefficient for the various species, measured as shrinkage or swelling within normal moisture content limits of 6-14 %. This dimensional change coefficient can be used to calculate expected shrinkage or swelling.

Laminate

Laminate Flooring

Very Durable Surface
Unlike wood, which can dent, laminate flooring is almost impervious to dents and scratches. Laminate flooring has what's called in the industry a "wear layer" that protects the photographic layer underneath. Some manufacturers, like Shaw, give very generous warranties on this wear layer.

No Bad Pieces
Unlike real hardwood, which comes with many imperfect pieces that need to be thrown out or re-engineered, there are no defects in laminate flooring.

Good for Moist Places
Laminate flooring can be installed in bathrooms, kitchens, and other places where you encounter "topical moisture" (as Mannington calls it). But it will not tolerate standing pools of water. However, let's be clear that neither solid hardwood nor engineered wood can tolerate standing water, either. For heavy moisture, you need a very impervious surface like vinyl or tile.

Easy to Clean
Just use a vacuum or broom. Mop with a slightly damp mop. No floor waxing needed.

Resists Stains
Laminate flooring's tough surface resists stains. And if you do get a stain, it's easy to clean off.

Laminate

Laminate Flooring

While laminate flooring can be priced at 20 to 25% less than hardwood flooring, it has many other benefits consumers should be aware of. Laminates offer a huge selection, so you can really find any style or design to complement your living space. From domestic to exotic wood species, from porcelain tile to natural slate, from narrow boards to wide boards to individual tiles. Laminate flooring has it all.

Laminate flooring is very durable. It can be installed in high traffic areas and other areas you would never dream of putting a hardwood floor. Laminate flooring is also protected against UV rays and won’t fade over time with exposure to sunlight. Homeowners with kids and pets especially like the durability of laminate flooring.

Laminates are easier and less expensive to maintain in the long run than other types of flooring. The protective top layer of laminate floors protect against moisture, wear, fading, and staining.

Finally, laminate flooring is the ultimate environmentally friendly flooring choice for your home. Laminate floors made from recycled content, and installation is glueless, so there are no harsh chemicals or fumes emitted during installation from glues and adhesives.

Vinyl

Vinyl in Kitchen

Design Flexibility
Vinyl sheet flooring and tile are available in myriad styles and colors. Vinyl tile is available in shapes that can be custom cut and laid out in patterns using different colors or finishes. Tiles can be arranged, for example, to depict a corporate logo or to guide traffic in a hospital or retail setting. Virtually any look can be obtained to suit any decor, including classic looks that simulate wood and ceramic. Custom-made designs are easily created using sheet vinyl flooring.

Resilience
Vinyl flooring reduces noise and provides comfort underfoot. Unlike such hard surfaces as wood, laminate, terrazzo or ceramic tile, vinyl floors have "give" and thus are referred to as "resilient" flooring.

Durability
Vinyl flooring is durable and time-tested, maintaining its beauty under heavy foot traffic and use. It is moisture and stain resistant, so spills can be easily removed. When compared with alternative materials, vinyl offers an attractive installed cost with economical maintenance over the life of the floor.

Vinyl

Vinyl in Kitchen

One of the most attractive features of vinyl flooring is the incredible array of colors and designs available. These remarkable design options result from two separate manufacturing processes used in creating vinyl flooring. The traditional inlaid construction process uses chips of colored vinyl that are pressed onto a carrier sheet and then bonded together; the more modern rotogravure process allows actual printing to occur on the vinyl sheets. Between these two processes, there is almost no look that cannot be provided by vinyl flooring.

The flooring itself is available in two forms – sheets and tiles. Vinyl flooring sheets come in 6 and 12 foot widths, and almost any length. Vinyl flooring is remarkably sturdy and wear resistant, and with some simple precautions, it retains its original beauty for years. As with all hard surface floors, it can be marked or scratched by furniture legs without protective pads, so be certain to use felt or a similar protector under heavy pieces. Vinyl can also be damaged when grit and debris are ground into its surface; avoid this by regular sweepings and moppings. And wet spills on vinyl are not uncommon (because it is such a popular choice for kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms), but these liquid spots can stain or discolor the vinyl surface if they are not promptly cleaned.

Vinyl Flooring is an excellent option in many situations and environments. Adding design versatility and attractiveness to vinyl’s traditional strong points, durability and affordability, makes vinyl an excellent flooring option for your home.

Tile

Tile Floor in Bathroom

Ease of Maintenance
While no floor remains entirely maintenance free, ceramic tile comes about as close at it can to being service free. Short of the application of the occasional sealant, applied once every four years or so, tile requires only the regular cleaning that any flooring surface would require. With the installation of grout, tile becomes almost impervious to water damage, and can be virtually hosed off if necessary. Many specialty products are currently available that assist greatly in tile maintenance and upkeep, all of which can be found in nearly any home goods provider or supermarket.

Adaptability
There is a tile option for nearly any application, and your imagination and creativity are your only limitations when installing tile. From porticos in a dining room to a tiled hearth in front of a fireplace, you can adapt tile to nearly any surface, indoors or out. Tile’s adaptability has been exploited throughout Europe, and examples for tile floors can be seen in kitchens, living rooms, dining rooms and even bedrooms. In some destinations abroad, it is not uncommon to find an entire house tiled wall to wall, in an effort to keep cool.

Tile

Cost Effectiveness
Dollar for dollar, tile still remains one of the most cost effective flooring surfaces on the market today. When considering initial costs versus longevity, it becomes quite clear that ceramic tile overall offers the best "dollar per mile" of any flooring surface. Ceramic tile's limited upkeep and maintenance adds to its value even further. Square footage material costs stay in check with most other alternatives, and while the initial installation costs may be slightly higher, it's important to consider all the long term costs and value when judging overall cost effectiveness.

Durability
The ancient Romans saw the benefit of tile in its durability, and this fact is not lost on us modern folks. Tile is great for high traffic situations thanks to its strength and resiliency to staining and wear. The ancient Romans originally used tile in a utilitarian manner, but it was soon obvious even to them that a decorative element could be introduced to tiling. While not extremely impact resistant, the wear ability of tile is the reason for its durability.

Tile

Ease of Repair
Even though ceramic is strong, there is still the opportunity for breakage, as with any earthenware. Simply remove the broken pieces, clean the area, reinstall replacement tiles and regrout the repaired area. It is important to keep several pieces of tile left over from your installation for these repair needs.

Style
As always, style counts, and tile is no exception to that rule. Tile has a finish and style to adapt to any décor; from southwest to cosmopolitan, there is a color and a texture to fit every need. There is an unlimited variety to tile, from bright vibrant colors to muted tones and everything in between, and a brief trip to any tile house or home improvement retailer will prove this point. While colors and textures can vary greatly between manufacturers, virtually any combination of color and texture can be found on today's market. Thanks to the variety of sizing options of ceramic tiles, design flexibility is drastically improved. You can opt for smaller 6" x 6" tiles, all the way up to the 24" x 24", as well as the squaring options, such as "brick and block" or "Flemish" style joints.
